Hardback, 200 pages with over 250 new colour photographs

These engines endowed the cars, starting with the 1936 2½ Litre, with performance that placed them straight into the class occupied by much more expensive machines such as the Bentleys and Lagondas of the time.

The author, as a volunteer researcher in the Jaguar Heritage Archive, spent years compiling a database of all the cars manufactured through the period, establishing a complete history of their production. This he has put to good use in the preparation of this definitive work, which examines the cars, their development and their features in unprecedented and probably unsurpassable detail, to satisfy the most demanding enquirer. Competition history, sales, exports, coachbuilt cars, one-offs, colour schemes, production changes, production numbers, chassis numbers and rally entrants are all included.

Containing some 250 colour photographs of outstanding surviving examples of the cars, along with images from the archives, this is truly the most in-depth study ever published of William Lyons's memorable family of cars of this period.

About the author

Allan Crouch author of SS & Jaguar Cars

Allan Crouch studied Sciences at Reading University, UK, and then pursued a career as a production engineer in the telecommunications industry in Brazil and the UK.

Now retired, Allan is the Registrar for SS cars for the Jaguar Drivers Club, and has expanded the register to include all the known cars worldwide by incorporating the major overseas registers in the USA, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and continental Europe.

Allan is a volunteer archivist for the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust (JDHT), computerising all the factory sales and orders ledgers for pushrod-engined cars from the early S.S.I and S.S.II cars to the Jaguar Mark V.

In 1979, Allan found and acquired a rundown and partially dismantled 1948 Jaguar 2½-litre drophead coupé, which he set about restoring and which has since won a number of concours competitions.

S.S.I & S.S.II Cars
The Birth of the Jaguar Legend
published by
The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust
Hardback, 176 pages

The first book on the S.S.I and S.S.II Cars was published in 2007 and covered the cars made in late 1931 to late 1935. The story is then taken up by the latest book to complete the coverage of the remaining push-rod SS Jaguar and Jaguar Cars made by Lyons.

Here are just two of the many positive reviews this book has received:

"Not exactly a historic romance, this book is nevertheless a page-turner for fans of Jaguar history and the Company's early cars. It would seem to be the new standard reference work on SS Cars and the author deserves to be congratulated for his diligence and dedication."
- Jaguar Journal, Official Magazine of the Jaguar Clubs of North America

"Jaguar Drivers' SS Registrar Crouch has done a superb job with this 176-page full-colour effort covering the 'sidevalve' period (1931-35)."
- Classic and Sports Car magazine

This book is still available in limited quantities and can be ordered directly from the Jaguar Heritage Trust website or by phone from them on +44 (0) 2476 564 420.
